The Speedmaster Professional is the only watch qualified by NASA for all manned space missions and the only watch worn on the surface of the Moon. That history is baked into every dial. At its price point, it is the most historically significant piece you can put on your wrist.
Omega launched the Speedmaster in 1957 as a motorsport chronograph. Its journey to the moon began in 1964 when NASA started evaluating chronographs for the astronaut corps. After a rigorous series of tests including temperature extremes, humidity, shock, vibration, and pressure, the Speedmaster was the only watch to survive all eleven tests without failure. It was formally qualified for all manned space missions in 1965. On July 21, 1969, Buzz Aldrin wore a Speedmaster on the lunar surface during Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong had left his inside the lunar module as a backup timer after the onboard clock malfunctioned. The watch has been on every subsequent crewed NASA mission. The current generation 310.30.42.50.01.001 runs the Co-Axial Master Chronometer-certified Cal. 3861, an update to the iconic manual-wind movement that powered the original Moon missions.
The Speedmaster is unique in the pre-owned market because its value proposition is not primarily driven by scarcity or grey-market dynamics, it is driven by 60-plus years of documented historical significance. Buyers who purchase a Speedmaster are buying a piece of human achievement that happens to also be a precise, well-built chronograph. At $7,800 to $9,200 for a current-generation pre-owned example, it competes on price against watches with a fraction of its history. Secondary market liquidity is strong, and demand from both serious collectors and new buyers entering the market creates consistent turnover.
The Speedmaster has been in continuous production since 1957 with many reference variations, so verifying you have the specific reference you're paying for is essential.
