The History

Omega launched the Speedmaster in 1957 as a motorsport chronograph. Its journey to the moon began in 1964 when NASA started evaluating chronographs for the astronaut corps. After a rigorous series of tests including temperature extremes, humidity, shock, vibration, and pressure, the Speedmaster was the only watch to survive all eleven tests without failure. It was formally qualified for all manned space missions in 1965. On July 21, 1969, Buzz Aldrin wore a Speedmaster on the lunar surface during Apollo 11, Neil Armstrong had left his inside the lunar module as a backup timer after the onboard clock malfunctioned.
